We are truly grateful for your participation in the recent Bielschowsky Memorial Meeting, honoring the legacy of the world-renowned ophthalmologist Alfred Bielschowsky. Initially planned for 2021 to celebrate his 150th birthday, this gathering was a special occasion, made even more meaningful as we came together at Wrocław, the university where Bielschowsky once led the Department of Ophthalmology.
Your contributions and engagement created a unique platform for the exchange of knowledge and insights in strabismology, pediatric ophthalmology, and neuro-ophthalmology. With both educational and scientific dimensions, the meeting offered enriching workshops, lectures, symposia, and poster sessions, highlighting Bielschowsky’s numerous contributions to the field. It was also a remarkable opportunity to foster international collaborations and strengthen connections with colleagues from Poland, Germany, and beyond.
Thank you once again for your participation and contributions. We look forward to seeing you at future events and continuing our shared commitment to advancing ophthalmology.
Sincerely,

Alfred Bielschowsky (December 11, 1871 – April 5, 1940) was a German ophthalmologist.
His specialty was physiology and pathology of the eye, particularly in regards to research of eye movement, space perception and diagnosis of oculomotor anomalies. He studied medicine at the universities of Breslau, Heidelberg (pre-clinical), Berlin and graduated 1894 in Leipzig.
A year later he started his ophthalmological training in Leipzig under the supervision of Sattler.
Bielschowsky subsequently studied and worked in the eye clinic at the University of Leipzig, receiving his habilitation in 1900 and becoming head physician of the clinic in 1906. While at Leipzig he worked under physiologist Ewald Hering, and with Franz Bruno Hofmann, he conducted studies of fusion and cyclodeviation in superior oblique muscle paresis. In 1912 Bielschowsky attained to the chair of ophthalmology at the University of Marburg.
In 1923 Bielschowsky was appointed chair of ophthalmology at the University of Breslau.
In 1932 he published “Die Lähmungen der Augenmuskeln” – an influential work on eye muscle disturbances.
He emigrated to the United States in 1936. In 1937 he became head of the Dartmouth Eye Institute at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. He died suddenly in 1940.
